Dr. Dixon recently visited the kindergarten classrooms at Semper Elementary as part of their unit on community helpers. We visited all three classrooms and taught the kids how they can keep their teeth clean and cavity free by brushing, flossing, avoiding sugary snacks, and of course, visiting the dentist! We also taught about the dental profession, including all the different kinds of specialists there are. The kids were interested to see that all their adult teeth are sitting in their jaws, “waiting their turn” to grow in. The orthodontist makes sure all those teeth grow in the right way. Several kids asked how many years Dr. Dixon went to school. The answer? Four years of college, four years of dental school, and an additional two years of orthodontic residency. “But,” he reminded them, “anyone one of you can become an orthodontist someday!”
